Colonel Darby 40 Miler

Last month, we shared details about the Darby Challenge taking place in Fort Smith, Arkansas on April 26. This month, we are proud to highlight its sister event, the 17th Annual Colonel Darby 40 Miler, taking place in Lake Garda, Italy on April 30.

The 40 Miler continues to grow each year, drawing a multi-generational audience while uniquely bridging a civilian endurance event with active duty military significance. It serves as a powerful tribute to the life and legacy of Colonel William O. Darby. Last year, twenty-five Rangers participated, alongside a strong showing from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, US Army SETAF-AF, and additional military units from across Italy, Germany, and CONUS.

Trophies are awarded to the first three finishers, and all participants who complete the 40 miles within 12 hours are eligible to purchase a Colonel Darby 40 Miler challenge coin. Notably, this event is offered with no registration fees, reinforcing its spirit of service and accessibility.

To learn more, you can visit the Colonel Darby 40 Miler: Facebook page, Recap Video, or AFN overview.

While in the Lake Garda area, visitors may also connect with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8862. Additionally, our friends at the Benàch Cultural Association, creators of the documentary “With Love, Billy,” will be present.

We hope you will take this opportunity to honor the legacy, connect with the community, and experience this remarkable event.
