Ranger Creed

When the Chief of Staff of the Army GEN Creighton Abrams ordered the formation of the Ranger Battalions in 1974, he directed that they would be the elite, setting the standards for the Army.

Maintaining a code of ethics, a Ranger philosophy to live by, the Ranger Creed written by CSM Neal R. Gentry would encompass this philosophy and would be the hallmark of the spirit, discipline, and duty of all Rangers in peace and war. CSM Gentry was handpicked to serve as the first CSM for the 1st Ranger Battalion.

Still today, the Ranger Creed is a way of life; a guide for how Rangers conduct themselves. It’s more than just something recited in formation. It’s how we fight, how we lead, and how we win. It’s a promise, from one Ranger to another. It is the source that binds through loyalty the individual to his Ranger buddies and to his unit.

Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers.

Notice the use of the words ”I am” throughout the creed. This is something we can all learn from. No wonder our Rangers are the best.  They tell themselves what they are every day.

A Ranger says to him or herself every single day something like the following: “I am specially selected and well trained. I am courteous. I am neat. I care for my equipment. I am mentally alert, physically strong, morally straight, I help my teammates. I fight with all of my might. This is who I am.

And they have the habits to match the mindset - thy can’t just think – they must act. But it starts with the mindset and identity.

The Ranger Legacy Foundation embodies the spirit and principles of the Ranger Creed in both word and deed, ensuring its values live on beyond the battlefield. Just as Rangers are guided by unwavering discipline, selfless service, and an unbreakable commitment to their brothers and mission, the Foundation works tirelessly to honor, preserve, and extend that legacy.

Through the mission of completing the Ranger Legacy Center that supports Rangers and their families, commemorate their sacrifices, and inspire future generations, the Foundation reflects the Creed’s call to “endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers.” Whether preserving the history of their service or fostering community among veterans, the Ranger Legacy Foundation stands as a living testament to the courage, dedication, and excellence the Creed demands.
